Clay-based ceramic and porcelain tile is attached to a backer board with mortar, and then the tiles are joined together with grout. Mortar and grout often take two or three days to dry. Sometimes, the grout needs to be sealed. Also, tiles can be challenging to cut. While ceramic tile is cut with standard tools, more brittle porcelain must be cut with a wet saw.
Solid hardwood can be finished in the home or the factory. Both types of planks are nailed to a wood subfloor. Unfinished planks must be sanded, stained, and sealed, which takes about one week. It takes another week for the floor to acclimate to its new surroundings. An engineered wood floor, which has a surface layer of hardwood, floats over the subfloor.
